Fancy Mike

“I always loved listening to instrumental beat music,” Kleine says, ”I just never could afford the equipment.” The ex-Christian Dior visual artist now spends his days managing a biannual literary and fine arts journal while finishing his studies on French History and Literature. At night, he makes beats and e-mails famous people so they’ll listen to his music.”

Fancy Mike is a 21-year old beat maker, making some fine edge tunes, in the era of one of my favorites, Mux Mool. His excellent debut Madison Square Gardner came as a free download on the internet last year. It has now gotten a rework by a bunch of different producers, and the finished product took a interesting ambient, IDM turn in my mind. Not a bad thing, though the original version is still the strongest of them both. Two tracks from the new remix album Sigma Chi Primavera really caught my ears.

Madison Square Gardner is available for free here.

Peter & The Magician

Behind Peter & The Magician we find some familiar faces. Peter is Pierre-Alexandre Busson, better known as Yuksek, and The Magician is Stephen Fassano from Aeroplane. It sounds pretty much exactly like you would think if these guys clashed - epic disco funk with some vocoder voices hanging over. You know that kinda stuff that would set the perfect mood, anywhere.

This is the first track from the duo, and nothing else has been said, but this will do for sure. Twist will be featured on Kitsuné Maison Compilation. 11, hitting the stores 16th of may. The frenchmen are back!

New Jersey

When spring is marching in on us, I prefer some lazy tunes that only New Jersey boys can deliver. Ranging from psychedelic rock to lo-fi surf pop, it’s all good, all of it makes the rays so much brighter. When tunes like these can take form, New Jersey sure seems like a happy and careless place living in.

Ducktails and Family Portrait have both released amazing things this year, and with new material on it’s way from Julian Lynch and Real Estate, they keep the Jersey pot hot.

Real Estate - Resevoir #3

Ducktails - Don’t Make Plans

Family Portrait - Glide Pt. 1

The sound of Denmark

I thought I’d pay my dues to Denmark in this post. There is so much great things coming from our dear neighbors in the south - red sausage, cheap beer, nice clothing, referee haters and electronic music.

I do think that Denmark possibly has one of the most innovative progression in Europe to the electronic genres. It always feels so fresh and contemporary, and sometimes you can really hear the distinguished danish hum that has come to shape as of late; the crisp sound, perfect production and the deep driven house melodies. I thought I’d give you a taste from some of my personal favorites.

  • I’ll start easy. Taragana Pyjarama, or Nick Eriksen if you like, is a producer from Copenhagen. His newly released self titled debut is out now on Fool House, and I urge you to grab it! I couldn’t decide which tracks to pick, because they’re all equally awesome - all of them has the potential to be a single. What you get is some hazy vocals (made by Nicks wife), a summer breezy balaeric swing and blissful organic samples. Add to this some pulsating house beats, reminiscent to the greats of The Field and John Talabot.

Taragana Pyjarama - Sundanese Blonde

Taragana Pyjarama - The Ocean

  • Next up is the danish powerhouse Mislyd, consisting of Jens Jensen, Natal Zaks and Theodor Clausen, all of whom can be found in prominent projects in the danish house scene.  Last year they released a free EP called November, and was one of the most memorable releases in my opinion. November can be downloaded for free here. Until last week I wasn’t really updated on the status, and clear as day was that I’d slept on their latest release. The two track EP Melt / Bleak, differs quite a bit from November. The trio had some clear german house influences ala Moderat (who they’ve opened for earlier) and Booka Shade, while Melt / Bleak is gunning out leaning heavily on the techno sound. Await your headphones to explode about two minutes in.

Mislyd - Bleak

  • Averos is formed by the previously mentioned Mislyd boys, Natal Zaks and Theodore Clausen. They recently gave out their debut EP Theme One on the new label Farver. This song circles playful house around pitched voices and echoes. I’m thinking Fuck Buttons in a really good mood.

Averos - Averos

  • Kenton Slash Demon is another group from Copenhagen, and consists of Silas Moldenhawer and Jonas Kenton. They’ve been around for a couple of years, and I guess these guys, together with Trentemøller, are making the biggest impact on the international scene of all the danish electronic outfits. They just completed the last part in the trilogy, The Schwarzschild Solution, with the single Daemon. Following up last years killer single Sun, they had me in suspense for this release, and of course they deliver. With vocals from members of When Saints Go Machine and Bear in Heaven, this song takes a more poppy turn than the previous releases.

Full Frontal

I don’t know anything about Full Frontal, except that they’re from Ann Arbor and making some gorgeous electronica. This is the new single from the band, and it can be downloaded here. This song would’ve fit perfect in a Sofia Coppola film.

Clams Casino

Clams Casino is a man by the name Michael Volpe, hailing out of New Jersey and only 23-years old. Clams Casino have produced numerous beats for rap artists such as Lil B, Soulja Boy and others. He made the fine decision that he would release the instrumentals as a free mixtape. Download it here.

Recently he got signed to the hyped up Brooklyn label Tri Angle, and his new EP Rainforest is scheduled to the 27th of june. He’s nice enough to let us hear the closing track from the upcoming release. It sure sounds awesome, twisted and paranoid. Gonna get tight!

And here’s a taste from the instrumental mixtape.

Citymouth

Dropping Gems released this free EP of Citymouth in late march. The debut release, Holodecker, is a collection of both new and old material, and an appetizer for a forthcoming full length. What you get is a kinda eclectic piece of art, ranging from drone, lo-fi and glitching beats.

Download his free EP here.

WALSH

Behind the name WALSH we find Brandon Biondo, hailing out of Knoxville, Tennessee. Brandon kept himself active last year with two rather big projects, COOLRUNNINGS and WALSH - and he sure loves that capslock-key. Last years release, Smoke Weed About It, was one of my absolute favorite releases with songs like Westworld and Helicopter Does Not Exist.

Now it’s time for the second EP from WALSH, KARAOKE. It’s a banger just like the last EP. All his releases are available for free at Dracula Horse. I recommend downloading both releases, they’re equally awesome.

I just love this song, but I guess it’s easy to focus on the wrong things here. Put your headphones on, blast your ears off and let the raw baseline take you for a ride in the perverted van.

WALSH - I DRIVE THE PERVERT VAN

WALSH - CHIC / DAWGS BLUDDD

And this one’s my favorite from last years Smoke Weed About It.

Purity Ring

Again something unanimous and canadian. Purity Ring is the side-project from one of the members in Gobble Gobble, and has just surfaces on the internets. Either way there’s a single coming our way, Ungirthed, and is due to april the 18th.

Lofticries is the b-side, and in my opinion the absolute strongest of the two songs. This song has nice synth hooks, beautiful vocals and a tender taste that sticks through the entire song.

The Weeknd

Wild parties, cocaine, heartbreaks, strange sex games, luxury and decadence. Dark, lonely, weird, and unanimous  - you’ve got it all folks.

Under the moniker, The Weeknd, you’ll find a 20-year old canadian named Abel Tesfaye. He’s giving out his debut record, House of Ballons, for free here. Probably the best bargain you’ve got.

This is R&B broken down to it’s finests essence. Abels perfect voice is drifted alongside some dark electronics and haunted beats - together they wrap around your head. If Burial could sing like a mtv-star, I believe it coult turn out to something similar.

I’ve given this record some turns the past weeks, and now when it’s sunken down on me, I must say that this is possibly this years strongest release. With only twenty years in this life, this young man is sure to be a phenomenon. It feels so real, so effortless, and his storytelling sometimes seem authentic; just because of the the mystery and darkness behind it all.

Even though he’s not signed to a label yet, it won’t take long until you’ll see him at a major one.

I’d love to go to his release party.

Melted Toys

Melted Toys are a trio based out of San Francisco, and have just released their debut record, Washed & Dried, and is now available at the powerhouse Underwater Peoples.

First time I listened to Come On I thought that these guys are the afterbirth of fellow record mates Real Estate. That lush and summery lofi rock that makes you think it’s vacation day. But further in to the record I realized that they’re leaning towards a little more electronic sound. Blending those blissful riffs with a dash of synths and effects.  Check it out!

Keep Shelly in Athens

Keep Shelly in Athens is a mysterious duo hailing from Greece, not Brooklyn, Greece. They’ve been floating around in the blogosphere for a while now. They’ve released their debut LP In Love With Dusk on the great label Forest Family.

Body Language featured this remix on the bonus edition of their Social Studies EP. The song has a great drive with some awesome synth grooves.

Body Language - You Can (Keep Shelly in Athens remix)

The duos latest single, Hauntin’ Me, can be picked up at Trasparent.

Weekly Favorites

Gold Panda - Marriage (Star Slinger Remix)

Gold Panda latest single Marriage had some nice reworks done by Baths, Halls and Forest Swords, but the prize did go to Star Slinger who did an awesome job remixing this track.

Mux Mool - Brothers

I’ve been a die hard fan of Mux Mool for a long time. This song here isn’t released officially, but I took the time to cut it out from a mix he did for Klipkast a while back.

Corduroi - Anything For Now

Corduroi has ha just released his debut Anything For Now, that is a really solid listen and is available for free at his bandcamp. This song really kicks in after about one and a half minute.

HAHA - City Ghosts (Teen Daze Remix)

My first post here I wrote about HAHA, and he’s based from Teen Daze newly started record label Cultus Vibes. Teen Daze put his magic onto City Ghost just to make it a little more dreamy and epic.

Yr Love (Magick Mountain Deep Cover Remix) Holy Other

One to look out for in 2011 is certainly the New York producer Magick Mountain. I’ve been spinning last years release, One for My Ego, and this remix for quiet a while now.

This one is a remix of the also up-and-comer Holy Other. Not the atmospheric and fairytaleish sound as we’ve heard from Magick Mountain before, but this time he takes us deep under - deep under a dark wall of a sound.

Can’t wait for some new material.

Cannons Youth Lagoon

Youth Lagoon is a 22-year old man named Trevor Powers. Based from Juno Beach Records with an album in the pressings, The Year of Hibernation.

Apparently Pandit had some part of the magic in the making of this song, and that’s a guy I’ve been listening to lately. Here’s a nice video to Pandits song Kathryn, My Love

Baie Du Doré HAHA

I’ve been listening to Teen Daze quite a bit as of late, and when the canadian launches a record label it makes me curious.

Every release is available for free via download - and I’m not complaining. The stuff is actually as stellar as you would’ve thought.

I was most drawn to the artist named HAHA, silly names now days, yes. HAHA is a fellow named Greg Atkinson from Vancouver and he’s making some serious electronic ambiance that you can space out to in your computer chair.
